Ozzie arrived at Gable Cross soon after we did and before the clinic was even built! We adopted him through Labrador Rescue as a 14 month old who was due to be put to sleep because of severe elbow dysplasia (degenerative joint disease) affecting both left & right elbows. His radiographs showed advanced osteoarthritis. He needed constant medication and complete rest which, for such a young dog, gave a very poor outlook. However, as the clinics first patient, he has gone from strength to strength.
Following surgery to remove cartilage fragments from both elbows (resulting from fissures in the articular cartilage), Ozzie underwent a combination of acupuncture, massage and range of movement exercises plus treadmilling twice a week. His weight has remained at a constant 28kg but his shape has changed to a much more muscular, fitter individual and he now only needs medication occasionally. He is also able to have short periods of off lead exercise with Gable Cross's second resident Labrador, Loki, who, happily, is perfectly healthy!
Lucy was referred from a local practice via North West Surgeons, a specialist referral orthopaedic practice. At 8 weeks old she was badly bitten on her left elbow by two other dogs which resulted in an infected, fractured joint. The injury was so serious the surgeons advised against operating as a successful outcome was unlikely and amputation or euthanasia were both considered. The owner elected for conservative management and Lucy was referred to Gable Cross at 13wks old with a very inflexible left leg, lame and with much muscle atrophy.
With a specific programme of physiotherapy involving laser, passive range of motion, manipulation, hydrotherapy and acupuncture, over the subsequent three months Lucy's elbow became more flexible and the muscle over the shoulder and leg returned to a more normal condition.
While she will never be 100% sound, she has made a remarkable recovery and, with restricted exercise, she now leads a very full, active life!
